Project Introduction

This spring, I took on the exciting challenge from my current employer Van De Velde Packaging, of reimagining the essence of Easter through graphic design. Our mission was clear: to replace an older Easter box design with something that not only captures the essence of Easter but is also broadly appealing to patisseries and their customers. The result is an innovative Easter egg box that combines the rustic charm of coarse paper with the delicate precision of origami art. Every aspect of the box is designed to reveal a unique, colorful Easter scene that brings a smile to the face of each recipient.

From the outset, the aim of this project was to create a design that embraces both traditional and modern elements, giving it broad appeal. With the innovative simulation of an egg-shaped ‘hole’ on both the front and back, the design offers a surprising glimpse into the joyful Easter scenes unfolding within. It’s not just packaging, but a celebration of the season, ready to be printed in large volumes for Easter 2025, hoping to appeal to a wide audience and be embraced by numerous patisseries.

Project Introduction

This spring, I reimagined the essence of Easter for Van De Velde Packaging by replacing an old Easter box design with an innovative version that captures the essence of Easter and appeals broadly to bakeries. The new design merges the rustic charm of coarse paper with the precision of origami art, revealing a cheerful Easter scene through an egg-shaped ‘hole’ that embraces both traditional and modern elements. Intended for mass production for Easter 2025, this Easter box celebrates the season and is designed to be widely embraced, hoping to bring a smile to every recipient.

Inspiration and Concept Development

The inspiration for our Easter box design was strongly influenced by the emergence of AI-generated imagery, where illustrations incorporating origami elements became a popular trend. This fascinating interplay between traditional art forms and modern technology inspired me to develop a concept in which an origami scene unfolds within the Easter box. By simulating an egg-shaped ‘hole’ in the box, we created a window into a colorful, imaginative world. This approach not only offered a unique visual experience but also connected the historical art of origami with the celebration of Easter, a time of renewal and joy.

The color scheme of the box was carefully chosen to emphasize the feeling of spring and convey the cheerful spirit of Easter. Soft, cheerful, and sweet colors form the basis of the design, giving the whole a welcoming and warm appearance. This choice of pastel shades reflects not only the aesthetics of spring but also ensures that the box appeals to a wide audience. The concept behind this Easter box is a celebration of creativity and innovation, inviting every viewer to peek through the ‘hole’ in the box into an enchanting origami world.

Inspiration and Concept Development

The inspiration for our Easter box design stems from the rise of AI image generation and the popularity of origami elements, creating a fascinating fusion of traditional art and modern technology. This inspired us to create an Easter box where an origami scene is visible through an egg-shaped ‘hole’, serving as a window to a colorful, imaginative world. The design employs soft, cheerful pastel colors to highlight the spring feeling and the joy of Easter, reflecting not only the aesthetics of spring but also appealing broadly to public taste. This concept celebrates creativity and innovation, inviting viewers to explore an enchanting origami world inside the box.

Design Choices and Elements

In designing the Easter box, the selection of specific elements and themes was pivotal in creating a narrative design that is both visually appealing and meaningful. The main scene, positioned on the front and back of the box, creates the illusion of a scene visible through an egg-shaped hole. This effect, enhanced by the use of shadow effects and a rich cardboard texture, invites the viewer on a journey of discovery into the heart of Easter. The cardboard texture, which transitions from pastel light green to pastel light blue, symbolizes the transition from meadows to the sky, capturing the essence of spring. The placement of four origami eggs in front of this hole reinforces the Easter theme and adds an extra dimension of depth and interest to the design.

The box itself, designed with a ‘double-conical’ shape, seamlessly aligns with the egg theme, with the largest circumference at the midpoint of its height, subtly mimicking the shape of an egg. A vibrant strip of origami flowers and butterflies, carefully placed across the sides and top of the box, brings spring to life and connects the sides of the box with a ribbon of beauty and renewal. This strip, almost entirely covered with fresh pastel-colored origami figures, is intersected by a carrying handle, cleverly integrated into the design and executed in a complementary light green pastel color. This interplay of design elements and colors reflects not only the joy of Easter and the renewal of spring but also underscores our commitment to innovation, detail, and the celebration of traditional holidays through graphic design.

Design Choices and Elements

In designing our Easter box, the focus was on creating a narrative and visually appealing design, featuring a main scene on the front and back that gives the illusion of a view through an egg-shaped hole. This effect is enhanced by shadow effects and a rich cardboard texture transitioning from pastel light green to light blue, symbolically depicting the shift from meadows to sky. The box, shaped in a double-conical form that mimics the outline of an egg, is further adorned with a vibrant strip of origami flowers and butterflies, bringing spring to life and connecting the elements. These design elements, combined in a carefully chosen color palette, celebrate the renewal of Easter and underscore our commitment to innovation and traditional holidays within graphic design.

Production Preparation

The journey from design to production preparation was a meticulously coordinated task, with each step of the process executed with precision to bring the vision of the Easter box design to life. The design was created in Photoshop, based on a detailed CAD drawing, ensuring seamless integration of the visual elements with the physical structure of the box. This approach ensured that the design was experienced as a coherent whole, with every detail and color nuance perfectly in place. After several rounds of proposals and feedback, exchanged via PDF with the marketing team, the next step was to physically realize the design to assess its impact in the real world.

Using a large format printer and plotter cutter, multiple mockups of the design were produced on the actual cardboard to be used. These prototypes served not only as tangible proof of the design but also provided an opportunity for extensive review by the marketing department, management, and a select group of customers. The enthusiasm with which these mockups were received confirmed the strength and appeal of the design. The unanimous approval of all involved parties marked a significant turning point in the project, making it clear that this Easter box design was not only an aesthetic triumph but also a harbinger of success for the upcoming Easter celebrations.

Production Preparation

The journey from design to pre-production for our Easter boxes was a meticulous process, where the design was brought to life in Photoshop and CAD, then refined via PDF with the marketing team. After gathering feedback, physical mockups were produced using a large-format printer and cutter, essential for evaluation by marketing, management, and clients. These steps ensured that every detail of the design seamlessly integrated with the physical structure, and the enthusiasm and unanimous approval of the mockups indicated the potential success of the Easter box, ahead of production for the Easter celebrations.

Impact and Future Vision

As Easter 2025 approaches, this project is poised to make a significant impact on how Easter products are presented and appreciated. The Easter boxes, printed in hundreds of thousands, are destined for sale to patisseries and chocolatiers, both directly and through wholesalers. These uniquely designed boxes, carefully filled with ornate large chocolate eggs, will ultimately be sealed with the company stickers of the bakeries and chocolatiers. It is a great pleasure and honor for me personally to see my designs, spread across the country and even abroad, shining in the shop windows annually. It symbolizes not just the success of the design but also enhances the festive spirit of Easter and underscores the craftsmanship and care with which the products are made.

This tradition of innovative design and the recognition that follows serve as a continuous motivation to surpass myself with each project. The positive reception and enduring popularity of successful Easter designs, which often remain in use for several years, attest to the impact and appreciation achieved through such creative efforts. The prospect of continuing this tradition and further building a legacy of striking and meaningful Easter packaging drives my work in graphic design. The future promises a continuation of this cycle of innovation and satisfaction, with each new Easter season offering an opportunity to redefine and celebrate the beauty and joy of this season.
